The new technology diffused across California's processing tomato farms almost overnight. Financiers and UC Cooperative Extension (CE) agents helped California's processing tomato farmers adopt the new technology. Within 5 years, virtually 100% of the processing tomato industry in the United States was using Hanna and Lorenzen's mechanical harvester, and most farmers were planting vf-145. Over the next 35 years, harvest labor requirements per ton of processing tomatoes dropped by 92%, while the US processing tomato harvest more than doubled, from 4.1 to 9.4 million tons (Fig. 9.1) (Thompson and Blank, 2000).2
